This placement would suit... A driven person with a real interest in the Nepalese and their beautiful country. An ability to communicate and smile essential. Oyster offers the chance to teach in this unspoilt and fascinating country. This placement has two great aspects: you’ll have the challenges and rewards of teaching children in Kathmandu, as well as some memorable expeditions through the mountains of Nepal and Tibet. What will I be doing? Following our preparation course you’ll travel out to Kathmandu as a group and be met by our friendly local representative who will help you settle in. We will place you with local schools where you will usually teach English - but you may get to teach other subjects too. It’s challenging, but you’ll be well prepared and will be placed with at least one other Oyster volunteer so that you can team up to do lessons if you want. We don’t place you in the very poorest schools, as we want you to be able to make a genuine contribution to school life. You will find it even more rewarding if you get involved with extra curricular activities. Past volunteers have helped with the school choir, basketball, athletics and informally teaching local street children. You can also arrange to work on a Tibetan Refugee project. In your time off you’ll enjoy the Nepalese way of life, living with a local family and exploring Kathmandu. We’ll also offer you the chance to go further afield with our series of treks: a seven-day Himalayan trek, 10-day Tibet tour, three-day river rafting and Chitwan safari are all included. It’s a great opportunity to see Tibet, as well as Nepal. You’ll see some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world as well as life in remote rural areas. In a nutshell – this is a perfect chance to live and work in a totally different culture in a very beautiful country. Where will I live? Your accommodation will usually be with a selected Nepali family. Expect to share a room with another Oyster volunteer. Oyster Worldwide Support We offer a very personal service and are always happy to chat things through. Shortly before you leave we’ll hold a pre-departure course where you’ll meet fellow volunteers and get thorough preparation to help you with working and living in Nepal. On arrival in Nepal you’ll be met by our local representative who will give you plenty of useful advice and help you settle in. He will co-ordinate the teaching placements and expeditions and offer you friendship and support. He will also report back to the UK office to keep us updated on your progress.
