Coach sports around the world

Are you a sporty type looking for gap year ideas? Have you considered a placement teaching sports overseas?

You could find yourself becoming a coach or instructor for a few months, and still have time to learn the local lingo, sightsee, socialise or find yourself, if you really want to. In fact, it’s fast becoming one of the most popular of all gap year pursuits. Well it would be really. How else can you kick back and play your favourite sport, whilst simultaneously contributing to another culture, building bridges with far-flung communities, engaging in foreign travel and enhancing your CV?

Kick off
See yourself as a fierce competitor for Sven? Pull up your pants then! Fancy running round like a nutter, with a football and a bunch of Caribbean kids in tow? Yeah, that’s more like the gap year style. You can do just that and take your pick from a whole bunch of locations that beat the hell out of your local rec in terms of things like palm trees and ice cold drinks.

Opportunities are available in Thailand, Costa Rica, Peru, South Africa, the USA and Trinidad to name just a few of many. The lengths of these placements range from a few weeks to a year and you should remember to bring plenty of enthusiasm.

Scrum down
If you like the thought of practising your tackle on tropical shores, then pick one of these placements. Rugby is not quite the global sport that football is, so your choice of destination is a little more limited. Having said that, you will almost certainly be able to find something that interests you in Fiji, Tonga, Trinidad or South Africa!

Rugby is the national sport of Fiji and their passion for the game is evident in all walks of life on the islands. Speaking of islands; think palm trees, cocktails, girls in grass skirts etcetera etcetera. Of course, if you’d rather be on the edge of the wilderness, head out to South Africa. Just don’t feel you have to tackle any wandering elephants that start interfering with play.

National service
As a nation, we suck at tennis. Don’t argue, because it’s true. Our top players keep getting beaten by blokes from places you can’t even spell. The gap year answer? Go overseas and teach their kids how to be rubbish the Great British way. Do it for Queen and country (or Princess Consort and country if things change before we update this.)

Not buying into the sabotage thing? You’ve got to admit it’s still a great way to hone your skills, live in a beautiful location and help the less fortunate anyway. There are placements available in Ghana and Thailand, which also involve a spot of English teaching. You can also pack up your racquet and head to India, where the enthusiastic folk of Bangalore await you. Then of course there’s also the USA, where you can pick up about £400 a month for your services.

Travelling without travelling
You know the story - you’re just maxin’ and relaxin’ and shooting some b’ball outside of the school, when a couple of guys (they were up to no good) started making trouble in the neighbourhood. You got in one little fight and your mum got scared; she said: 'You’re spending your gap year coaching basketball in Ghana. No, don’t argue, it’s final. You’ll learn a lot from it and the kids will really benefit from your enthusiasm.'

Well, that’s one scenario anyway. You could also try organising it yourself; it’s quite simple and you can go where you want rather than where the old dear sends you. It might seem odd that we can go to the States and coach them basketball, but it’s true. You could also head for Ecuador, Thailand, India, Tanzania or Peru if they appeal a bit more.

Stick at it
Hockey can be a vicious game. It’s not all ‘jolly hockey sticks, rah rah rah!’ we can assure you. However, hockey is not all about aggression. Speed, agility and a wily nature also come in handy when faced with a sea of sturdy wooden sticks. In short, it’s not just for the school girls of St Trinians. So, if you think a curved bit of wood would make you feel safer overseas, take a look at hockey. It seems the sport is surprisingly popular in Africa, with coaching schemes in place in Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa. You’ll also find that you can go and coach in Canada, where they would like help with the less Photo courtesy of CCUSApunchy version of their favourite sport.

Not only, but also...
If all the above sports are just too tame for your liking and you’re not happy unless you’re thousands of feet above, or below, sea level, dangling off a rock, doing the splits or crashing through waves, then don’t be put off. American summer camps are always looking for rock climbers, surfers and their ilk to pass on their skills to kids.
