This placement would suit... anyone with an interest in sport

In a country that has so much diversity in terms of lifestyle, religion and race, sport unifies and remains a focus for all. Cricket is by far the most popular sport in India. In fact cricket is one of the few aspects of Indian life that unites the whole country. Ever since the first game was played in India nearly three centuries ago, Indian people have identified with its tactics and skills - and cricket has been a major source of entertainment.

You don't have to look far in India to see children playing practice games in the street with makeshift bats, balls and stumps. The fact that most children will play at any opportunity shows their interest level and what a great environment India is in which to coach cricket.

Coach Cricket to Children in India with Projects Abroad

We feel that it is important that children get the basics of cricket right before progressing on to the more difficult skills and techniques. By embracing this commitment at grassroots level, our sport placements in India work with many schools in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Your role will be a mixture of passing on your knowledge of the game, handing out practical advice for games, and coaching at training sessions.

There is also the entertaining 'Volunteers versus Projects Abroad India Staff' cricket match where you can show off your cricket coaching skills in an international arena! Volunteers and staff members eagerly battle it out in the heat for the prestige that comes with victory. Reports of each game are always to be found in the monthly Sivikasi Times publication which is produced by volunteers on the Journalism project, then distributed across the region and in Projects Abroad offices around the world.

Your Role Volunteering Abroad on a Cricket Project in India

Being a cricket coach in India means you should be looking to improve the performances of each individual and the team as a whole. Every player is different and will need your specialised care and attention to improve their performance, which will in turn improve the performance of the team to some extent. But to really make a team successful you have to foster a spirit of trust and cooperation, and get the individuals playing for each other.
If the clunk of leather on willow, the ability to spot a googly or the scream of "Howzat?" is in your blood, then look no further than a Projects Abroad Cricket coaching placement in India.

Coach Tennis to Children in India with Projects Abroad

Depending on your stage of life you can volunteer as a Tennis Coach as part of a gap year, during a career break or as part of an alternative holiday. Everybody is welcome! You do not have to have previous experience, although it is beneficial if you do have some level of ability at racket sports, as you will be trying to impart skills used in a wide-range of similar games, like squash and badminton. But in practise anyone with a general love of sport will be welcome as a volunteer!

Your Role Volunteering Abroad on Tennis Project in India

You will be working in a variety of settings, but wherever you are you must be prepared to work in facilities which you may find a bit more basic than what you are used to at home. The coaching that you do will touch on many different aspects of the game of tennis, from helping children to develop their serves and positioning to teaching them about the history of the game, and famous players like John McEnroe and Andre Agassi. Of course your first task is likely to be teaching them the rules of the sport in the first place!

Most children - boys and girls - seem to have great enthusiasm and an unlimited appetite for tennis, especially when it is made accessible and fun. Before long you will begin to see improvements in their general health and fitness, as well as their confidence and general level of happiness. You may even set some individuals off down a path to sporting greatness! If you have the time and energy to help, there are many children, parents and schools who would be extremely grateful for your efforts.

Coach Sports in Schools with Projects Abroad

There are sports placements where you can help coach volleyball - a sport rapidly growing in popularity in India - basketball, tennis, athletics and football, as well as the established Indian favourites of tennicoit, badminton and, of course, cricket.

Depending on your stage of life you can volunteer as a Sports Coach as part of a gap year, during a career break or as part of an alternative holiday; everybody is very welcome! And you do not have to have previous experience. Anyone with a general love of sport can participate.

Tasks can be anything from setting up volleyball courts, taking fitness sessions for athletics, coaching football at training, practicing racket swings in badminton and educating children on sporting principles.
